Some SSB tips that you can't afford to miss

Updated 03 April

Here are some important tips which will definitely help you to perform good in the Service Selection Board Interview.

The Interview process is designed to judge the mental strengthattitude and outlook (vision) of the candidates along with some key leadership qualities and different character traits. Thus, this test should not be misunderstood as an assessment based on academic proficiency or intellectual abilities. It is the assessment of social traits and interest in different areas.  Some of the qualities to be judged by different testing officers are- Mental alertness, Power of assimilation, Balance of judgment, Clear, easy to understand and logical views, Variety and dimensions of interests, Ability for social adjustment and effective leadership, Intellectual and moral integrity. All the so called Officer Like Qualities are based on the above mentioned traits.

The IO (Interviewing Officer), at Service Selection Boards, tries to judge the leadership in the candidate by means of the direct or purposive conversation during the whole course of personal interview. The assessor also tries to evaluate the depth of training potential in the candidate. The questions raised during the interview will be directed in a manner that the candidate will automatically emit enough light on his leadership traits in his answers.

Two critical aspects of the Personal Interview which play an important key decisive role are the candidate's extent of knowledge about different issues of his environment and his/her power of expression. He should be able to express his views clearly, accurately and comfortably. This will make him achieve more marks. While answering to the questions, candidates should take the lead, references and cover as much as possible as this will directly prove the legitimacy of his views. In other words, merely answering the questions by saying "YES" or "NO" will not suffice. The candidate should be able to explain and to convince the assessor when he shows signs of any disagreement to a given proposition. He must logically, clearly and forcefully substantiate his views with reasonable valid points.

At the Service Selection Board Interview the officers concentrate on so called officer like qualities the extant of which directly reflects the potential of leadership abilities in the candidates. Merely on academic or textual knowledge is not checked as it doesn't have much significance with the life of a military officer. The candidate should therefore, be aware of the various qualities of leadership and also with the fact how those qualities could be inculcated and developed by him.

Some of the key general attributes of leadership are :-

Intellectual Attainments: It is the depth and extent of comprehensive and practical knowledge in different subjects related to candidate's environment.

How the candidate has implemented/applied his comprehensive theoretical knowledge in different practical situations in his life?
How best he can solve problems?
How will you organize a Picnic?
What will be your future planning if you will not be selected in this interview?
