Soon National Defence Academy will start offering only engineering degrees

Modern warfare is not only about aiming enemy from distance and killing them. It more about unmanned combat drones, new generation fighter jets, directed-energy weapons like lasers and high powered microwaves, complex ballistic missile, cyber warfare etc.

The warfare is more and more technical now. With the rapid growth in technical strength of many global military, Indian Armed Forces is also becoming more technology intensive.

The battles of future will not be fought by humans, but they will be carried out with highly sophisticated modern warfare machines. Forecasting all this, Indian Armed Forces is aiming to increase the strength of warriors with 'technical' minds who will help in digitization and making the battlefield more network-centric in the coming years.

Armed Forces are now slowly but steadily attracting more engineering graduates.

Also, National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla (Pune) is fully prepared to start offering only engineering degrees in all the courses from the upcoming sessions. This was first followed by Navy that launched the 'Bachelor of Technology' programme for cadets joining National Defence Academy after class 12th.

Now, the Indian Air Force has also made it "compulsory" for cadets at the NDA. Indian Army is also planning to implement the same thing.

With the full-fledged implementation of this, the traditional B.Sc degree course in NDA will soon end completely. As of now, the Army has left it "optional" for cadets.

Bachelor of Technology in applied electronics and engineering was kicked off for all the Naval cadets joining NDA from the June 2016. The same began for Indian Air Force cadets at NDA from January 2017, while the one for Army cadets is planned to commence from the coming December course.

Around 350-400 cadets join the National Defence Academy after clearing UPSC exam followed by Service Selection Boards Interview every six months. Now they will do the first three years of BTech programme at NDA and the fourth year at their respective training academies as per their courses (IMA, AFA, INA).

  1. Keeping up with technology is always welcome hence NDA may follow a more customised curriculum suiting the limited time of cadets in classroom apart from rigorous training schedule. Cadets interested in engineering will be happy but cadets really interested in non engineering will have no other option.
